Linux Forums is a very good source of information about several of the major distros and has a very active forum. I personally use the forums for whatever distribution im using, most of them have one. For example, when I used Ubuntu, I looked through the Ubuntu Forums; when i became a Debian user, I signed up on the Debian User Forums, and so on. These forums are generally more active than Linux Forums, but there always is a large chance that the answer you are looking for could be here.

Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.
This means that you can run lots of software not designed for linux under linux, and not emulating windows so there is basically no perfomance loss, in fact sometimes theres a performance gain!

Sometimes looks do matter, and it can be a hassle to look up screenshots of distro’s to figure out which one looks good or gain a general idea of how it runs. The coding studio does a good job providing you with several regularly updated screenshots of the most popular distros out there.
